Family Generation Dress

This dress is 55 years old give or take, it belongs to my mother who was born in 1953, in Rocky Mountain House, Ab.  Her mother made it for her, because back in those days money was scarce. There is a B&W photo some where of my mother in this dress but we have not been able to locate it yet.   My grandma who was a homemaker kept her little girls dress, and passed it down to my mom when she started her own family.  I was born in 1980 in Peace River, Ab to Yvonne and Wendell George.  I too got the chance to wear the dress at the ripe old age of 3. I remember getting my hair done ( I hated my hair by the way and Im still in therapy for the  back combed, teased hair do) and my mom telling the story of when she wore the dress.  We arrived at the studio and we did a bunch of photo’s then the photographer handed me a book telling me to point to the picture and say the name of the animal while looking up.  I still remember saying PIG.  I really wish he would have turned to the puppy or kitty page. I’m not a fan of pigs. lol   Well, in 2007, I gave birth to my daughter Declynn in Peace River,Ab and about a year ago my mom showed up with the dress.  She had it  pressed and ready to go. She had to remake the under shirt because the old one had deteriorated too much.  She put it in my hall way closet and told me to make sure I got a picture of Declynn in this dress.  Well, the other day it dawned on me I never did get that picture done and Declynn would soon not fit the dress. Yikes, so at 7pm I hauled my daughter off to the studio for her picture.  On the way there I phoned my mom and asked what color the background was so I could be similar.  She said she would go and look and call me back. Well the color was blue tones so that was what I hung up for Declynn as well.   I thought this was a neat little story, and would share some of my personal life with my clients.  My 14 year old niece Cassandra George also had her picture in this dress and when I get my hands on a copy will get it up on the blog. Im still trying to hunt down my mom’s pictures so keep checking back.

Jamie Biggs - What an awesome story Leah and what a classically cute little dress. In Life magazine a few years back there was a photo essay about a professional photographer who bought a pair of Levi’s 501 jeans and took put his newborn daughter in the jeans and then every year on her birthday he took the exact same picture with her in the same shot and by the time she was 18 she fit them perfectly. Pretty cool idea too, anyway, great shot and lovely story for you and your lil girl.

admin - Thanks Jamie, now if only I was a writer Im sure I could have put the story out there better. lol That’s why I’m a photographer, words are not my thing. It is neat and hopefully the dress will be around for my grandkids. I just hope 1 out of the 4 has a girl. The jeans story is super neat, I would like to read that I will have to go and see if I can hunt up the story.
